What Dartmouth weights most

Dartmouth favors intellectually curious, self-starting students who will contribute to a close-knit undergraduate community and take advantage of the quarter system. They weight demonstrated passion and initiative in a specific area - whether research, outdoors leadership, entrepreneurship, or campus organizations - more heavily than bland lists of activities. Expect stricter evaluation of genuine residential fit and sustained engagement; they are somewhat looser than peer Ivies on early leadership if you show deep, recent impact tied to Dartmouth-style life (outdoor programs, small-group teaching, or Greek and house communities).

Supplemental essay strategy

Use the "Why Dartmouth" essay to cite concrete offerings that match your plans, for example the D-Plan quarter rhythm, the Rockefeller Center or Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network, the Outdoor Programs leadership training, or specific faculty and lab projects with professor names. Show familiarity with residential life by naming West House or your intended house community and explain how the quarter system and tight social networks will let you pursue two or three distinct interests in one year.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from Dartmouth (search official admissions site or Reddit r/dartmouth). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
