What Catholic University weights most

Catholic University prioritizes applicants who demonstrate intellectual engagement with disciplines tied to its strengths, especially music, philosophy/theology, architecture, and engineering, and who are comfortable in a faith-informed academic setting. They favor students with clear, discipline-specific evidence of preparation - portfolio pieces for architecture, audition/recordings for music, rigorous math/science for engineering, and coursework or writing that shows theological/philosophical curiosity - over generic extracurricular breadth. Compared with other Tier 5 privates they are looser on absolute GPA/SAT thresholds but stricter about fit with the university mission and program-specific readiness.

Supplemental essay strategy

For the "why Catholic University" or program-focused essay, cite concrete resources: the School of Architecture's studio pedagogy and portfolio review expectations, the Benjamin T. Rome School of Music audition options or performance venues, or the Institute for Human Ecology and theology seminars, and explain how specific faculty, labs, ensembles, or courses will advance a defined project or career goal. If applicable, mention willingness to engage with campus ministry or ethics-focused coursework to show cultural fit, and attach or reference a focused sample (portfolio excerpt, short composition, or research abstract) when the prompt or program allows.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from Catholic University (search official admissions site or Reddit r/catholic). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
