What Catholic University weights most

Catholic University admits at 86% and actively recruits across a broad ability band, meaning GPA/test scores are genuinely soft filters—what matters more is demonstrated engagement with the school's specific strengths (music performance portfolios, engineering project work, theology/philosophy coursework) and, importantly, whether you signal alignment with the Catholic intellectual tradition (not necessarily practicing Catholic, but intellectually curious about faith-integrated learning). They're notably looser on standardized metrics than peer DC privates but stricter on fit signals; a 3.2 GPA with a strong music audition or engineering project will outweigh a 3.8 with generic interest.

Supplemental essay strategy

Use the "why us" to anchor yourself in one of their flagship areas—music performance/composition, philosophy, architecture, or engineering—and reference a specific program element, professor research, or campus resource (e.g., the Basilica's music program, the philosophy department's medieval studies focus, the architecture program's DC monument studios). Avoid broad statements about "Catholic values"; instead show you've researched how this school uniquely integrates faith and intellectual inquiry in your intended major, or how the DC location serves your specific academic goals.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from Catholic University (search official admissions site or Reddit r/catholic). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
