What UC Davis weights most

UC Davis favors applicants with strong STEM preparation tied to real-world experience in agriculture, environmental science, biological research, or animal health. They reward demonstrated fit with Davis' applied, collaborative research culture and land-grant mission, so applicants who show hands-on lab/field internships, FFA/4-H leadership, veterinary/clinic experience, or sustained community-based environmental projects stand out; less weight is given to flashy extracurriculars unconnected to academic focus, but interdisciplinary applicants who connect arts or policy to science also do well.

Supplemental essay strategy

For the personal insight and "Why UC Davis" material, cite specific labs, faculty, the Teaching and Research Centers (eg, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, Bodega Marine Lab, or the Cannery Farm Commons), and explain exactly how those resources will advance your project or career goals; mention Davis' bike-friendly town and collaboration with UC ANR or nearby research farms only if it ties to a concrete plan or past experience.

Where to focus next

If you only have time for one thing this month, do this:

  1. Read 2 admitted-student essays from UC Davis (search official admissions site or Reddit r/ucdavis). Notice the level of specificity — that's the bar.
  2. Write the ‘why this school’ supplement first, before anything else. If you can't fill 250 words with school-specific reasons, pick a different school.
  3. Find one current student to ask about their experience — admissions offices often connect prospective applicants with current students. The follow-up email becomes specific essay material.
