UCSD weights demonstrated STEM engagement and research potential heavily—this isn't a school that treats STEM interests as a generic box. They're particularly drawn to applicants with sustained involvement in CS, bioengineering, or oceanography (their marquee programs), especially those who've conducted actual research, competed in technical competitions, or built projects. As a test-blind public school, they rely entirely on GPA, coursework rigor, and extracurricular evidence of intellectual passion, so a 3.85+ GPA with AP/IB depth in STEM courses and concrete project work will outperform a well-rounded humanities applicant with similar numbers. Unlike peer UCs, they're less focused on leadership roles or community service breadth and more interested in what you've *built* or *discovered*.
UCSD's prompts typically ask you to connect your academic interests to specific departments or research initiatives. Rather than referencing the school's "innovation" or "location," identify 1–2 faculty members or specific labs aligned with your intended major and briefly explain what draws you to their work—show you've actually explored the department website. If applying to Revelle College, note its general education requirements explicitly; if applying to Engineering or Thurgood Marshall, anchor your response to how that college's structure serves your STEM trajectory. Avoid discussing UC San Diego as a lifestyle choice; they want evidence that you've researched the intellectual ecosystem.
