- Other: AP Research paper on environmental determinants of asthma, captain of science Olympiad team
- Why admitted: Strong near-perfect academics plus demonstrated local impact in public health and clear alignment with UC San Diego’s research and community health opportunities likely tipped the decision.

- Standout: Interned in a university psychology lab studying bilingual language development, co-authored a conference poster
- Other: Volunteer interpreter at community clinic, worked part-time to support family
- Why admitted: Borderline academic numbers were offset by compelling demonstrated fit for Cognitive Science research and significant life context and resilience.
Ethan L. - WAITLISTED
- GPA / Test: 3.95 / SAT 1480
- Major: Engineering (Mechanical)
- Geography: Washington State
- Hooks: Legacy (parent attended UC system)
- Standout: Regional FRC robotics team lead, designed award-winning mechanism that earned engineering scholarship
- Other: Internship at a local manufacturing firm, strong teacher recommendations
- Why waitlisted: Academically competitive but in a crowded engineering applicant pool, limited demonstrated research or unique extracurricular depth relative to admits likely kept him on the waitlist.
Sophia K. - REJECTED
- GPA / Test: 4.0 / SAT 1520
- Major: Economics
- Geography: California (Bay Area)
- Hooks: None
- Standout: High-level internship at a wealth management firm, created a popular personal finance blog with sizable readership
- Other: Model UN officer, numerous APs and extracurricular breadth
- Why rejected: Despite excellent numbers, rejection likely reflected lack of distinct intellectual depth or specific alignment compared with similarly or more uniquely accomplished applicants in a constrained admit pool.
Daniel P. - REJECTED
- GPA / Test: 3.45 / ACT 27
- Major: Computer Science
- Geography: Florida
- Hooks: First-generation, low-income
- Standout: Self-taught programmer who contributed to open-source projects and built a community tutoring program for coding
- Other: Part-time job to support family, strong essays describing obstacles
- Why rejected: Under UC San Diego’s typical academic mid-50% range for CS, quantitative metrics were below the usual threshold, and admission was limited despite strong extracurricular context.
